Steganography is the oldest yet most effective method for concealing a secret message or file in an image file, and it has been used in different forms since ancient times. The essential key to Secrecy is concealing a message without letting others know. This is the fundamental distinction between two words: privacy and secrecy. Other people are aware that something is concealed under Privacy, but nobody is aware of it in Secrecy.

This activity may be accomplished using a variety of tools known as “Steganography Tools.” However, there is a constraint or restriction that if a sender uses Steganography Tools “A,” the recipient must decode the concealed secret message using the same Steganography Tools “A.”

So, in this tutorial, we’ll show you how to conceal a secret message or file in an image file using a simple Windows function called “Command Prompt.” A video tutorial with step-by-step instructions is provided at the conclusion of this article.

The following things will be discussed in this article:

2. Using CMD, hide a secret message/file in an image

The Command Prompt is a basic Windows function that may be used to accomplish or complete a variety of complex tasks.

If you don’t know, here’s a link to one of its cool features: Using Command Prompt, recover files from a virus-infected hard drive, memory card, or USB drive (100 percent Working)

To conceal a message, just follow the steps below:

Step 1: On your local disk, find the location of the message file holding the Secret Message and the Image file behind which we’ll conceal our message. We’ve stored both files under “D:” in this example, as indicated in Image No. 4 of the GIF image below.

Step 2: From the keyboard, use “Windows key + R” to start a new window. Type CMD and press Enter. The Command Prompt window will appear.

Step 3: Now all you have to do is enter one command:

“Path of the Text File”+”Path of the Image File” “Path of the destination File” Copy /b “Path of the Text File”+”Path of the Image File”

In this scenario, the text file is called “Message.txt” while the image file is called “Nature.jpg.” So, here’s a basic command to try:

“D:message.txt”+”D:Nature.jpg” “D:Naturemessage.jpg” Copy /b “D:message.txt”+”D:Nature.jpg” “D:Naturemessage.jpg”

and then hit Enter. Our steganographic Image File, “NatureMessage.jpg,” was made in “D:.” This file will include information from the “message file.” You may look at images 7 and 8 in the GIF below.

Step 4: You may send this finished picture, “NatureMessage.Jpg,” to any friend.

Step 5: To locate the hidden message in the steganographic Image file, just open it using “Notepad,” since our message was in the “.txt” format, and “Notepad” is a supported tool to open it.

Step 6: Press the “Ctrl+End” key on your keyboard after launching Notepad. Here’s where you’ll find the hidden message. Take pleasure in it.

3. Initial Password Protect and then Hide a Secret Message Using CMD

If someone finds out about the secret message in any way, it will no longer be a secret. So, let’s add an additional degree of protection by using Winrar to password lock our secret message text file. Simply follow these steps:

Step 1: Make sure you have the “Winrar” application installed on your computer. If it isn’t already installed, go ahead and download it.

Step 2: In Winrar, right-click on the “Message.txt” file [in this example] and choose “Add to Archive.” The Winrar application will launch in a new window. To make this file password protected, go to the second tab “Advanced” and click the “Set Password” option.

Step 3: Once you have the “Message.rar” file [in this example], just run the following command in Command Prompt:

“D:Message.rar”+”D:Nature.jpg” “D:NatureMessageRar.jpg” Copy /b “D:Message.rar”+”D:Nature.jpg” “D:NatureMessageRar.jpg”

The resultant Steganographic file is named “NatureMessageRar.jpg.” Simply provide this file along with a password key so that it may be opened. Please see the GIF image above.

Step 4: Now, if you/your buddy wants to access the secret message, just open the “NatureMessageRar.jpg” file using “Winrar” to remove the password, and then open the message.txt file to read the hidden message.
